Here's Grandpa and His Bowties!

 

Here's the Grandpa from another blogpost...*Updated Dear Old Dad, with his snazzy bowties for each day of the week.  I couldn't resist the patterned felt pieces to make these fun bowties. Here's the rhyme for Grandpa's Bowties.  Playing with Grandpa is so much Fun with Friends at Storytime!

A Crown for a Day!

Since we are doing a combination Halloween and Medieval theme soon, I got out my felt sets from a couple of years ago. I have a rhyme that I made up about Queen Sophie and her colorful crowns for each day of the week. I made a felt set of crowns and also a file folder crown. I had colorful gems that I used on my crowns along with lots of glitter!! I hot glued shiny sequins to the file folder crown after I had laminated it. I used construction paper in the file folder, but brightly colored card stock or even some shiny or holographic paper would be really pretty too! Depending on the group (or my mood LOL!) Don't Throw Your Trash in My Backyard!

Here's my inspired post about Garbage Trucks! There are several great posts about trash that I drew from to make my storytime theme. There's this one at Libraryland and another great post at Miss Sarah Storytime. Here's a post at Read, Sarah, Read! and then a stinky, smelly storytime at Awesome Storytime.
This post at Destination Storytime has a printable set of trashy Alphabet cards to play a game after reading I Stink! by Kate and Jim McMullen. 


I used a Google image that I printed and laminated and added velcro to the back to use with the Five Green Garbage Trucks rhyme.
Even though there were so many great rhymes already done, I had to make my own! LOL!

Garbage Trucks Each Day of the Week. I used Google images and laminated them, cut them out and added magnets to the back. You can let the kiddos help you add the pieces to the board as you say the rhyme. You can also play, "Which One's Missing?" with the colored trashcans or trucks.

Check your Pocket!

Miss Margaret wanted to do a 'Pocket' theme for storytime and wanted to use this book, What Did You Put in Your Pocket? by Beatrice Schenk deRegniers. Michael Grejniec's illustrations are childlike and very bright and colorful but the text is difficult to read on some of the pages because of the placement. So,... we made a felt set to use with the text.  I did use a little creative license with one of the items from the book. I changed the Monday item from chocolate pudding to pistachio pudding. I didn't have enough brown felt for two items (pudding and molasses) and I did have a great pistachio green piece of felt. I used some slick fabric paint and some glitter glue for details on the pieces. My grandson's hand was the pattern for the hand.  I did paint the back of that piece with glue to stiffen it up a bit.  I typed up the text and we're ready for some rhyming fun!

We offered a Home Extension too!  We prepped 2 shapes and made holes for lacing to make a pocket. We did use some glue on the ends of the yarn to stiffen it a bit to make it easier for the kiddos to lace the shape. We gave the kiddos some leftover  ant die cuts from another programming session to go in their pockets. The ants tied our pocket theme into another book,  Max Cleans Up by Rosemary Wells.  Max is always so funny! Tea Time - Take Two

I seem to have tea party on the brain. I finished all my teapots and teacups and I'm totally in love with them! I noticed that I had 7 colors of teapots after I finished the Tea Time rhyme/activity and thought, "Hey, 7 days of the week...I'll make a rhyme that uses a different color for each day."  So, I sat right down and thought up a rhyme...well, not so fast.  I admit to having a bit ...o.k. ... a lot of trouble with it, but I think this one will serve the purpose; Days of the Week Tea Time. I've also had the nursery rhyme/song  'Polly Put the Kettle On' stuck in my head for a week! Maybe now I've got this out of my system, and I can move on to another theme LOL!

Happy Trails to You...Cowboys!

Cowboys is a really fun storytime theme. I found some Pinterest boards with ideas. Here's one from Colleen at Teaching Heart and Jana's board here. Here's another from Linda Martin that has some really adorable pins.  Anyway, a few years ago I decided to put together a Cowboy storytime. I couldn't find many rhymes so I made up several to fill in my theme.  The titles are links to the rhymes.

Cowboy Boots! 

I can't remember where I got the pattern for the boots since I made these several years ago.  It could have been a Mailbox magazine pattern. I subscribed to Mailbox magazine when I taught preschool many years ago. I'm sure you could find a clipart pic that would work. I love the glitter and large sequin 'spurs' of these colorful boots!

I also made up a rhyme about Cowboy Joe and his colorful Cowboy Hats!  Cowboy Joe wears a different color hat each day of the week.  I made this set out of pellon and embellished with glitter, sequins and fabric paint.                                                 
I found 2 new picture books that fit the Cowboy theme. The first might be storytime material; Cowboy Boyd and Mighty Calliope by Lisa Moser. Another really cute book that would be better for reading at home is Giddy-up Daddy! written and illustrated by Troy Cummings. The only slightly cowboyish song that I have right now is Mama Don't Allow. We love to clap our hands and stomp our feet and bounce up and down and spin around; but our favorite is to shout, "Yee-Haw!" in storytime. *Update* I found a funny cowboy song, "The Cowboy Song": a funny song by Bryant Oden.
