Pretty Parrots

I've been thinking of a Pirate Storytime theme and of course I needed Five Pretty Parrots! These were a bit tedious but I'm so pleased with my pretty parrots!  I deconstructed and tweaked a Google image to make my set. I can use these to play our favorite game, "Which One is Missing?". The kiddos never get tired of that activity.  After we've finished the rhyme I say, "Let's play a game!" We review the colors of the parrots and then I say, "Cover your eyes". I step in front of the felt board and reach behind me to grab one of the parrots. I step aside so that they can see the board and then I say, " Open your eyes"! They love it!  The older kids get it quickly and the younger ones learn how to play quickly too!      Here are other Pirate posts; Pirate Treasure and Ahoy Matey!.

Two Happy Owls!

Here are my newest 2 little fingerpuppet owls!  I used a Google image to deconstruct and used large googly eyes.  I made a little rhyme that's a variation of Two Little Bluebirds.  You can tweak the basic rhyme for whatever theme and animal/thing you have.

Two Happy Owls

Two happy owls hooting in the night;  One named Bob and one named Bright.

Fly away Bob...fly away Bright!  Come back Bob...come back Bright.

Two happy owls hooting in the night. One named Bob and one named Bright!  Hoo Hoo!

These little guys make me happy!  Owls are super Fun with Friends at Storytime!

Birds of a Feather

Spring is in the air and I've seen robins and cardinals and blue jays and woodpeckers and so many small chickadees and sparrows in my backyard I've been inspired! I found these beautiful bird patterns at Downeast Thunder Farm's lovely blog! She has many gorgeous patterns that she makes into ornaments. I tweaked them a bit because I am not stitching mine. I used hot glue and some fabric paint and glitter glue to make mine for the flannel board.  I've posted about bird storytimes before.  I also made the set that is on Melissa's blog, Mel's Desk.  Be sure and check out the Bird board on Flannel Friday's Pinterest Here!  I'm sure you can find several bird rhymes to go with these but I made up a quick little rhyme:  Birds in My Backyard to go with the 10 birds that I've made.  There are so many lovely books to go with this theme! Birds in Spring are so much Fun with Friends at Storytime!!

Five Fancy Peacocks!

I've been wanting to make a set of peacocks for awhile and finally I did it!!  We plan on doing a program later this summer about birds and one of our books features a peacock, so that's as good an excuse as any to make a rhyme and set of 5 proud peacocks. Here's a link for the rhyme- Five Peacocks I used a Google image and loosely translated it into felt using some sequins and gold glitter glue, fabric paint and hot glue! I'm happy with the results but I don't want to make anymore!! This was fairly simple but very tedious!
Birds and especially Peacocks are a lot of Fun with Friends at Storytime

♫Green Grass Grew All Around♫

A couple of years ago I saw this post from In The Children's Room for the song, 'The Green Grass Grew All Around'. I loved the song and the idea! Here's a Youtube link for a longer version of the song.  I set to work to make my version of each of the flannel pieces so that we could sing this fun song!  I told the kiddos to pretend they saw the tree and then added the branch, nest, egg with bird, feather and flea. My nest has pieces of rafia and string glued to it. I used a feather with a piece of purple felt glued to the back. I used this with a bird theme but you could also do it with a theme about trees or homes!  This was a lot of Fun with Friends at Storytime!

Pretty Color Birds (filefolder)

Here's a quick easy filefolder rhyme to use as a color recognition activity. I traced the bird shape on the filefolder and cut it out. I added white paper cloud shapes and a brown construction paper branch before I laminated the folder. Then I traced the features on the lamination with a Sharpie. The cloud shapes could just as easily be green and be leaves. I've had this rhyme a long time and can't remember where I originally found it. This activity covers two of the ECRR components: Talking and Playing. I have another bird post here with some cute finger puppets.

Color Birds

Blue bird, blue bird,
High in a tree,
How many blue things can you see?

Repeat for other colors.

Talk about the objects in the room or outside the window or on the children's clothing, or even other things that the children know is that color.

Little Birdies

When my grandson J.W. was 16 months old he called birds, "chirp, chirps". Toddlers seem to be fascinated with birds. These little finger puppet birds have been a big hit with the preschoolers that come to storytime. I started with the classic Two Little Blackbirds rhyme and with some tweaking ended up with Two Little Blue birds and one color led to another... I've been thinking about other animal fingerpuppets with this rhyme also.
Perhaps, Two little green frogs sitting near a rock
one named Brittany and one named Brock.
Hop away Brittany, hop away Brock... You get the idea!   I think it could be a lot of fun!

Here are my finger puppets and rhymes. I think the feather adds such a debonair touch to the little rascals!  I added this cute penguin version from here and here

Two Little Blue birds sitting on a hill.
One named Jack, and one named Jill.
Fly away Jack, fly away Jill,
Come back Jack, come back Jill
Two Little Blue birds sitting on a hill.
One named Jack, and one named Jill.

Two little red birds sitting on a wall...named Pam and Paul
Two little yellow birds sitting in a tree...named Doug and Dee
Two little purple birds sitting on a stone...named Jeff and Joan
Two little green birds flying to a cloud...named Quiet and LOUD!
Two little pink birds hopping on the ground... named Up and Down.
Two little orange birds flying in the air...named Cliff and Clare.

"Chirp, Chirp!"    It's so much fun at Storytime!
