We recently got in 2 adorable board books that have nice large clear pictures and minimal text that will be perfect with our toddler crowd at Storytime. Miss Margaret asked for a puzzle felt set to go with them and I noodled a bit and came up with this set. We'll add each row starting with 1 and hopefully they'll guess what it is by the time we get to 10. That's the plan right now...LOL! We'll see how it goes. I used glitter fun foam for my shapes but I had some butterfly sequins that would fit for the number 10. There were only 9 shapes in the shape book so we added the trapezoid shaped basket for number 10. It will be fun to teach them that word! Shapes and Colors and Counting to 10 are so much Fun with Friends at Storytime!

Hot Air Balloons take 2
This is technically not-a-flannel post. LOL! Last year I posted my Hot Air Balloons and promised a riddle game that goes with that theme. Finally, I am posting the riddle rhyme link here; Hot Air Balloon Ride. I used Google images that I mounted on colored construction paper and laminated for each verse of the riddle. You can add a piece of velcro to the back of each picture and put them on the flannelboard as you say the riddle rhyme. My memory of using this is that it generated a good bit of discussion about the places we like to play or go.
I prepped the craft by punching the holes in the small paper plates and cutting the tissue paper into strips. You could easily just have the kiddos color the plate with markers and even add some stickers before trimming to hot air balloon shape. They threaded the yarn through the holes and glued them to the 'basket' (cut up old file folders). When I did it, I had the kids glue the tissue to the plate with glue stick and then the parents trimmed the plates but you don't really even have to trim the plates. This craft could lend itself to talking about shapes too!
Hot Air Balloons are a lot of Fun With Friends at Storytime!

Up, Up and Away
I know this post might seem random...well it is! But, ... this was a fun theme and I wanted to share with you. Two summers ago our Summer Reading Theme was One World Many Stories and one of the images on our marketing pieces was of children in a hot air balloon. That gave me the idea for this theme. Then I found a book that I really wanted to use, The Big Trip by Valeri Gorbachev and I was ready to go! We sang the fun song, When I'm Feeling Up by Rick Hubbard to complete the 'up, up and away' theme. We enjoyed the following rhyme that I adapted by adding more verses and colors. Then we played a "Which one's missing?" game with the colored balloons. I'll have to share the riddle rhyming game I made up in another post.
Pretty Balloons
adapted by Kathryn Roach
Pretty balloons are in the air
Lots of colors everywhere.
Red and Yellow,
Green and Blue;
Can you see the colors too?
Foating high up in the sky
Lots more colors we can spy.
Orange and Pink,
Purple and Brown
Balloons are high above the ground.
Up high we'll ride and look down below
As we ride in our hot air balloon RAINBOW!
I still remember the fun we had with this theme; plus I am in love with the glittery hot air balloons!
I have so much fun with my friends at Storytime!!
